What’s Actually in Your Toothpaste? A Plain-English Guide to SLS and Why We Left It Out

Most of us have spent more time reading a cereal box than the back of our toothpaste tube. That’s understandable — the ingredient list is small, the words are long, and none of it seems to matter as much as whether the toothpaste tastes good and does its job.
But one ingredient is worth two minutes of your time: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, better known as SLS.
Here’s what it is, what it does, and why NOVUDENT® doesn’t use it.
What SLS actually is
SLS is a foaming agent. It’s the reason toothpaste turns into a mouthful of bubbles when you brush. It’s also used in shampoos, dish soap, and industrial cleaning products, because it’s very good at one job: stripping away oil and grease so water can wash it off.
That’s not a scare tactic — it’s simply what the ingredient is designed to do. It’s cheap, effective at creating foam, and has been a standard part of toothpaste formulation for decades.
Why foam isn’t the same as clean
Here’s the part that surprises most people: foam has nothing to do with how well a toothpaste cleans your teeth. The actual cleaning work is done by mild abrasives and active ingredients that physically and chemically address plaque and enamel. Foam is a sensory cue — it feels thorough, so we assume it is.
SLS gives you that feeling of a “big clean” without adding any extra cleaning power of its own.
Where SLS can cause problems
For most people, SLS in small amounts causes no issue at all. But it’s a known irritant for a meaningful minority, and dental research has linked it to a few specific complaints:
• Canker sores. Several clinical studies have found that people who switch to an SLS-free toothpaste experience fewer and less painful mouth ulcers.
• Dry, irritated gums. SLS can strip the protective mucin layer in your mouth, leaving soft tissue more exposed and sensitive.
• Taste disruption. SLS is known to interfere with taste buds temporarily, which is why orange juice tastes strange right after brushing.
• Sensitivity flare-ups. For people already managing sensitive teeth, an aggressive surfactant added on top of that sensitivity isn’t doing them any favors.
None of this makes SLS dangerous. It makes it unnecessary — a legacy ingredient that made it into toothpaste formulations because it was cheap and foamy, not because it made anyone’s smile healthier.
